To be fair, it's a ymmv trope that is specifically about stories that have no meaningful conflict and stakes because the author made everything so goddamn bleak and awful that there's no believable way for the story to conclude in any kind of satisfying way. How do you make a dark and/or serious fic not reach the 'too bleak, stop caring' trope
